On June 16, 2005, a meeting was held with the Parish & Finance Councils from both the Assumption and Immaculate Conception parishes to explore the possibility of becoming one Church community. And thus our adventure began.
Over the next nine month the councils from both parishes meet regularly and with help from the diocese, made a decision to ask the parishioners of both parishes how they would like to see the LaGrange/Grafton Catholic community move forward. On February 1, 2006 a survey was mail out to all of the families in both parishes with one simple question; "Do you support forming one parish to better serve the Catholic Community of the LaGrange/Grafton area?" A total of 41% of the survey's were returned with 71% of them in favor of forming one parish. Yes we received some negative comments, but the overall feeling was this is what we needed to do to make us a more vibrant parish.
On February 16, 2006 Fr. John submitted a letter to The Most Reverend Bishop Anthony M. Pilla asking his permission for us to form a new parish from the mergers of the Assumption and Immaculate Conception Parishes. A letter was received back on February 28, 2006 granting us permission to create the new parish Over the next several months a Mission Statement was developed, a name was chosen, new guidelines for organizations and councils were developed, and so much more.
On October 29, 2006, in the Midview High School Gymnasium, The Most Reverend Bishop Richard Lennon formally established the parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace from the merging of the Assumption and the Immaculate Conception Parishes and install Reverend John P. Seabold as its Pastor.
Now the building pictured above was not present on this blessed day back in 2006. In fact it was not even envisioned. We still maintained both parish buildings and celebrated Sunday masses, weddings, funerals and other liturgical clebrations at each location. The Immaculate Conception building, also know as OLQP North, was also used for daily mass and eventually became the current day chapel. The rectory at the Assumption location was used as the office. (The old Assumption church, rectory and property were sold years later)
Over the next couple of years the new Parish and Finance Councils with guidance from Father John decided to move forward on the construction of a single worship space. A capital campaign committee was formed and through the generous donations of our parishioners and friends, we raised around one million dollars. Using this money along wIth our investment funds and a loan we were able to start construction of the new worship space in the spring of 2009.
On April 23, 2010 the Most Reverend Richard Lennon dedicated the new church. Now not many people know that we actually had two dedications. A couple of days before the dedication in April 2010 the granite top for the altar arrived. As they removed it from the shipping container it cracked in half and there was no way to repair it. We were definitely in a panic mode not sure what to do. So a call was place to the Bishop and he so graciously decided to dedicate the church and we would then dedicate the altar when it was repaired.
On May 27, 2010 the Most Reverend Richard Lennon came back and dedicated our new altar.
On October 29, 2022 we will be celebrating our 16th anniversary. As we look back at the rich histories of our founding parishes let us be thankful for all of the sacrifices and forethought our forefathers gave to us.
